Salma Hayek Nuance Lipstick

Hello readers! As a CVS shopper, I noticed a new cosmetic collection by Salma Hayek debuted last month, which has been receiving quite a lot of press lately. The product line is called Nuance and, from the cosmetics I've tried, I am quite impressed. Today I have a review for you of two of the Nuance lipsticks - Dusty Rose and Passion Pink.

The first thing I noticed about these lipsticks (and the other Nuance products) was the packaging. It is incredibly sophisticated and calls to the natural component of the make-up line. These lipsticks have a lovely sweet smell that is in no way chemical. They almost smell like a cross between hibiscus and honey. On the lip, they have no taste and are incredibly moisturizing. It really felt like the product sank into my lips instead of floating on top of them. These lipsticks were a very luxurious experience and really made me feel like I was treating myself by wearing them. They have a truly impeccable texture. Now, onto the colors.

What's on my toes? China Glaze Below Deck!

Today I have for you all the first installment of my recurring feature "What's on my toes?" I am a big fan of do-it-yourself pedicures. I typically change my toe polish about once a week or so, as opposed to my finger nail polish, which I change several times a week. I also don't believe that the two have to match, but they also shouldn't totally clash. I like to try to choose colors that compliment each other. I have really been into bright fun nails lately, so on my toes I decided to wear China Glaze Below Deck for a change of pace. I was in the mood for a neutral on my toes to balance out the bright blues I've been wearing on my fingers.

MOOD Struck Teal to Turquoise Color Change Nail Polish Review

I saw this polish in a chain clothing store (which will go unnamed). The polish claims to change color with a temperature change. It comes in several varieties, but I picked up the teal because I have been on a blue kick lately. I must say that I was way too excited to stumble upon this. I felt like I had discovered something new and amazing. That is until I called my mother and a family friend who informed me that they had used a similar polish in the 70's when they were my age. Well, I guess what is old is new again!

I debated about reviewing this for you. I have some new polish purchases I really want to review for you, but I did a quick online search and couldn't find any reviews of this particular shade. The polish claims to change from a nice true teal to a bright turquoise - hence the name Teal to Turquoise.
Sorry about the blurry picture! I couldn't seem to get my camera to take a great one, but you get the idea.

15 Follower Giveaway!!!

Hi there! I walked into CVS today looking for the new Wet n Wild On The Prowl Collection, which they did not have. Instead, they had (drumroll!!!).....MERMAID'S COVE!!! I have been looking for this collection all summer, and it is notoriously difficult to find! Sadly, they did not have the whole collection, but they did have several of the blues from the collection. I picked up a couple bottles for myself and two bottles to share!

More of My Favorites

Hi there! Today I have for you some more of my favorite products, including some additional categories for nails and eyes.

NAILS:

Polish Remover: I use both Beauty Secrets Acetone and Non-Acetone remover. The acetone version is pink and smells a bit like raspberries - not nail polish remover. The non-acetone remover is a green shade and is gentle yet effective.

Treatments: I have three nail treatments that I use. First and most used is Seche Rebuild. I also use this as a base coat. Second, I use Orly Tough Cookie for days when I want a bare nail look. It really does strengthen my tips. Finally, I use Orly Nailtrition for when my nails are in really bad shape from either changing nail polish too much or from a nail trauma - such as breaking a nail down to the quick.

EYES:

Mineral Eye Shadow: Hands down this goes to Bare Minerals. They have so many shades to choose from and their quality is impeccable. They also have an excellent line of liner shadows, and their regular shadows work very well as liner shadows themselves.

Plum Overload - L'Oreal Color Riche Lipstick Haul

Hi there! Today I have for your three lovely L'Oreal Color Riche Anti-Aging lipsticks I picked up on clearance at Target. I love Target's clearance end caps, but I digress. The three shades I picked up are all in the berry/plum family - Berry Royale, Robust Plum, and Plum Twist. I was a bit unsure of Robust Plum and Plum Twist in the tube - I thought they might be too brown for my fairer pink skin tone, but boy was I wrong!

Sephora by OPI Fall Collection Mini Review

Today I have for you some quick thoughts on two of the colors from the  Sephora by OPI Limited Edition Fall Collection - My Personal Serpent and Tempted by Teal. I made my way over to Sephora last week to try them out. I love that Sephora lets you swatch their Sephora by OPI line before you purchase and that the bottles you purchase come sealed.

As soon as I saw these two colors on line, it was love at first sight, but when I tried them on in store, I was seriously surprised by the colors. I've really been feeling dark smoky blues lately - like Zoya Cynthia - so I was really excited by My Personal Serpent when I saw the color in the bottle. However, when I got it on the nail, it looked like a dingy gray black....not at all what I was expecting. I have found with other Sephora by OPI nail lacquers that the color swatch online is very different from the actual color. However, with My Personal Serpent the online swatch is spot on and looks nothing like what the color looks like in the bottle. Sadly, this was a pass for me. The color didn't have much depth or much blue in it for that matter.

My Personal Serpent

Next I tried, Tempted by Teal. Again, I really loved this color in the bottle. It is a lovely metallic teal with a silver shimmer and just a hint of gold if you hold the bottle at the right angle. When I put this on the nail, it just didn't look right. The lovely shimmer with a hint of gold was lost. The color looked a bit flat and a little frosty for my taste. I seriously considered purchasing it because I love the idea of the color, but I just couldn't justify the purchase when there are so many other colors I love. Below you can see the color swatch from the website. On the nail the color is lighter and a lot frostier. It looks like someone applied a light teal and painted it with a silver top coat. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it was not what I was expecting given the online swatch and the way the color looks in the bottle.

Tempted by Teal
Finally, I wanted to tell you how difficult Tempted by Teal was to remove. It would not come off my nails! It stained my cuticles and my finger tips for over a day!

Sephora by OPI can be purchased at Sephora stores and online. They retail for $9.50 each. I highly recommend signing up for the Sephora Beauty Insider program. You get great samples, excellent discounts, and a free birthday gift!

ULTA Nail Lacquer in Limelight

For the past few weeks I've really been sticking to neutrals on my nails. I finally broke out of that rut tonight by wearing one of the untrieds from my collection - ULTA Salon Formula Nail Lacquer in Limelight.

ULTA salon formula nail lacquers come in a square bottle with a square cap. The black cap looks really sleek and makes these polishes look quite sophisticated and expensive. The cap is easy to handle (though I prefer round caps). I really like that the bottle has the full list of ingredients on the back. The brush is medium sized and fans out nicely, providing easy manipulation on the nail.  Please excuse the messy nails - I seem to have misplaced my trusty clean up brush!

Limelight is exactly as it sounds - a true lime green. Not too green and not too yellow. It has a lovely cream finish and is very shiny on its own. It goes on a bit thin, which is to be expected from a light green. Overall I was really digging the color. It's really perfect for spring and summer. Since we have a few weeks of summer left, I'm trying to wear as many fun summer colors before I go into my fall color binge!

This polish refused to dry. It was the strangest thing. I tried no top coat, Sally Hansen Qwik Dry, and Out the Door. I even tried it with the ULTA brand X-Dry top coat to no avail. Regardless of the top coat (or lack there of), the polish remained tacky for over an hour. And when I say tacky, I really mean incredibly fragile to even the slightest touch. While I love the color, the formula on this polish was incredibly frustrating. I did a little research and the website claims ULTA salon formula nail lacquers are quick drying polishes...maybe I just got a bad bottle?

You can find Limelight and other ULTA salon formula nail lacquers at your ULTA store and online. Currently, Limelight and several other polishes are on clearance as it was brought out as part of the spring collection. I am consistently surprised and impressed by the colors ULTA comes out with in their lacquer. They are always spot on the nail trends. These polishes frequently go on sale. I picked this one up during their buy 2 get 2 sale, so I will be trying my other ULTA polishes to see if they suffer from the same issues.

What do you all think of this polish? Are you a big green fan? Had any trouble with ULTA polishes?

A Few of My Favorites

I thought I would begin this blog by sharing with you all a few of my favorite products - with more reviews to come!

Nails:

Nail Polish: I have so many favorite colors its hard to choose, but my two favorite brands are China Glaze and OPI. No other brand does shimmer colors like China Glaze and the formula on OPI is nearly impossible to beat (I'm especially fond of their duo and multi-chromes).

Base Coat: Seche Rebuild from the Perfect Nail line. I used to be a compulsive nail biter (with the occasional relapse). This stuff has really helped me rebuild and fortify my nails.

Top Coat: Out the Door. Seriously, 45 seconds = dry nails!

EYES:

Shadows: Revlon Color Stay 12 Hour Eyeshadow Quad. These are ahhhh-mazing. Velvety smooth, well-pigmented, and really do last forever.

Mascara: CoverGirl Lashblast. I know this one is controversial - people either love it or hate it. I am a lover! I'm especially fond of the Volume Blasting variety (or as it is better known, "The Orange One").

Eyeliner: The Body Shop Eye Definer. The color saturation is incredible on these. They are very easy to use - feel more like a gel liner on the eye rather than a pencil - and stay on for hours.

LIPS:

Lipstick: This category is a tough one for me. I have so many lipsticks that I love, but my top two would have to be Maybelline ColorSensational and Revlon ColorBurst. A close third comes from L'Oreal - my go to shade is Diane's Tuberose.

Lip Liner: I have yet to find a lip liner I am truly satisfied with. I don't really see the purpose of lip liner to be honest. What do you all think? Any suggestions for me?

Lip Gloss: Hands down is C. O. Bigelow Rose Salve. I contend that this is indeed a lip gloss, but many people would say that is cheating as rose salve isn't technically a lip gloss! So, the runner up is the C. O. Bigelow Methalip line with L'Oreal Color Riche glosses if I am looking for a true gloss (Incredibly pigmented!). I'm really more of a lipstick lady.

So there is the first part of my list! Come back later in the week to see my picks for the face and miscellaneous category. What about you? Any particular hypes or gripes?

You can also see my reviews on Total Beauty as LacqueredLady.

Welcome!!!

Hi there! Welcome to my blog! I have been a follower of other blogs for years and finally decided to take the plunge with a little nudge from my friends.

What is this blog all about? Well, as you can tell by the name I'm a nail polish junkie! A true addict constrained only by my graduate student budget. I am also a lover of all things beautiful and beauty related. On any typical day you can find me at Ulta, Walgreens, Sally's, CVS, Target (you name it) scouring the beauty aisles for sales and new products to try.

So what makes this different from other beauty blogs out there? My perspective of course! I spend pretty much all day doing research or teaching. I love how when I turn the page of a book in the archives my painted nails spice up the library. I don't have any tattoos or wild hair color, but I do express myself through make up and nail lacquer. Nothing says "I'm here!" like a glittered thumb! I love color and texture and will pretty much try any beauty trend once. My grandmother was an oil painter and actress. When I was very young she told me that your face is a canvas - so paint it! That's what I have been doing ever since my mother let me first wear make up.

What will you find on this blog? Nail polish reviews of course! But also reviews of other beauty products, how-tos, and general beauty discussion. I'm a huge drug and big box store shopper. I love MAC, Lancome, and Chanel (to name a few), but alas I am constrained to only the occasional splurge. Let me know if there is anything out there I should try!

Stay beautiful!
